There and Back Again!

One week ago today our first hike was at Picacho Peak. Unfortunately, we began to run out of daylight so climbing to the very top was not an option considering that the park would close at sunset. After a day of traveling this was our first stop from the Phoenix airport. Not even a quarter way up the peak, we began to realize how steep of an incline we would have to overcome. There were areas of the hike that the incline was so intense that we had to use metal cables for assistance. Needless to say, having never hiked before, we were not expecting the sport to be so difficult. Although we didn't make it to the very top that day, we thought there was no way the other hikes could be any more difficult.

Our experience today surely showed our improvements. Previous hikes that we experienced from the past 7 days such as Wasson Peak, Blackett's Ridge and Ventana Canyon, really gave us the practice and strength to improve within that first week. We noticed dramatic improvements from these trails because climbing Picacho, no longer felt impossible. Reaching our half way point in nearly half the amount of time it took last time, was inspiring. Now that we weren't being rushed to reach a point before sundown, we were able to relax and enjoy the view but still achieving our goal in record time.
